Play an M3U playlist on an LG TV
An M3U playlist is a simple list of channel names and stream addresses. Out of the box, an LG TV can’t do much with it – an IPTV player turns it into live TV with a TV guide. Here’s how with Nightdeck.
Nightdeck is a player only. It contains no channels, movies or shows and doesn’t arrange providers. Only use it with sources you’re entitled to – for example cable TV through your own tvheadend server, your own media server or a licensed service you pay for.
What you need
- An LG TV with webOS 4 or newer (2018 models on), connected to your home network and the internet.
- The address (link) of your M3U or M3U8 playlist – for example from your own media server such as tvheadend or from a licensed IPTV service you pay for.
- Optionally the address of a TV guide in XMLTV format (.xml or .xml.gz). Many playlists already include it in their header.
- Nightdeck on the TV. Coming soon to the LG Content Store.
Step by step
Install Nightdeck
Open the LG Content Store on your TV and install Nightdeck.
Choose “M3U playlist”
On first launch Nightdeck shows “New playlist”. Choose “M3U playlist” at the top. Later you get to the same place via Settings → Playlists → “Add playlist”.
Enter the playlist address
Enter the full link under “Playlist address (M3U)”, starting with http:// or https://.
Add the TV guide
Enter the EPG address under “TV guide (XMLTV, optional)”. Leave it empty if the playlist already includes one.
Connect
Give it a name if you like, e.g. “Living room”, and choose “Connect”. Nightdeck checks the address and loads the channels.
Watch
Live TV shows your channels with a preview, the TV Guide shows the schedule. OK switches to full screen.
Tips
- Times in the guide are off? Fix it under Settings → Live TV & EPG → “EPG time offset”.
- More than one source? Add each one as its own playlist. Favourites and history stay separate per playlist, and you pick who’s watching on launch.
- Very large lists: Nightdeck is built for lists with tens of thousands of channels. The first load takes a moment, after that it comes from the cache.
- Stream formats: Nightdeck plays streams over HTTP as HLS and MPEG-TS. Other protocols such as RTSP aren’t supported.
- Just want to look around? Under “No playlist yet?”, “Try the demo” starts a demo with freely licensed movies.

Frequently asked questions
Can I open an M3U file from a USB stick?
No. Nightdeck loads playlists from an address (http or https). If the file is only on your computer, make it available in your home network, for example via your NAS or media server.
What’s the difference between M3U and M3U8?
M3U8 is the same list format in UTF-8 encoding. Nightdeck reads both.
Which LG TVs are supported?
TVs with webOS 4 or newer, which means LG models from 2018 on.
How much does Nightdeck cost?
The first 3 days are free and fully unlocked. After that €10.00 per year or €29.99 once, for up to 2 devices in your household.
Are channels or movies included?
No. Nightdeck is a player only. You need your own source that you’re entitled to use.
